Geese impact on the lake

Geese are major contributors of phosphorus in lakes and ponds.

A single adult Canada goose produces up to 1 to 2 lbs. of droppings daily, and their feces are highly concentrated with nutrients. Consequently, just four adult geese can contribute as much phosphorus to a waterway as an entire household septic system.

This nutrient loading acts as a direct catalyst for eutrophication. When excessive phosphorus enters the water, it triggers massive algal blooms and rapid weed growth. These blooms deplete dissolved oxygen levels, degrading overall water quality and sometimes leading to fish kills.

Managing goose populations, particularly near residential shorelines or stormwater retention ponds, is often necessary to control these excess phosphorus inputs."
